{THM:S, Low Carb, Ketogenic, Nose-To-Tail}
Don't like organ meats? Me either! But, I can hardly tell I'm eating them when I make these Organ Meat Burgers. Even better, eating organ meats is like taking nature's most potent multivitamin – everyone can benefit!
All right, ya'll.
We've gotta address some hard truths today. And you're probably not going to like them.
I didn't, but I checked my expectations at the door, dove headfirst into the research, and finally decided that organ meats NEEDED to be a part of my life.
What Are Organ Meats?
Commonly eating types of organ meats include:
- Heart
- Tongue
- Liver
- Sweetbreads {Pancreas}
- Kidneys
- Brain
- Tripe {the stomach lining}
Why Should You Eat Organ Meats?
There are so many reasons that I just don't have time to dive into all of them right here, BUT I am going to summarize a few of them for you.
If you want to read more about the nose-to-tail movement, feel free to click through to the links I've provided.
Organ Meats are Nutrient Dense & Bioavailable: Unlike a multivitamin you can buy off the stores of a store, Organ meats are packed with tons of essential nutrients – and you won't just pee them out!
A 3.5 oz portion of Liver, for example contains:
- Calories: 175
- Protein: 27 grams
- Vitamin B12: 1,386% of the RDI
- Copper: 730% of the RDI
- Vitamin A: 522% of the RDI
- Riboflavin: 201% of the RDI
- Niacin: 87% of the RDI
- Vitamin B6: 51% of the RDI
- Selenium: 47% of the RDI
- Zinc: 35% of the RDI
- Iron: 34% of the RDI
Even better, these nutrients are “as nature intended” so you body can absorb them far easier than any vitamin – and with very little waste.
Organ Meats are Cost Effective:
When compared with typical cuts of beef such as steaks and even ground beef, organ meats cost FAR less money per pound.
They are not “popular” cuts of meat, and therefore can be found very cheaply.
Eating Organ Meats Reduces Waste
By eating the less desirable (but more nutritious) organ meats, you save those parts from becoming waste!
That being said, Organ Meats, take some time to develop a taste for.
And while you're getting used to the taste, hiding them in regular food is a great way to start!
These Organ Meat Burgers are one of my favorite ways to get in my organ meats – and super easy since I eat a burger almost every day!
Ingredients for Organ Meat Burgers:
